Easy Homemade Tomato Sauce

· Food Team
A good tomato sauce is built on simple ingredients and careful cooking. Onion and garlic provide a savory foundation, while crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and seasoning create a balanced finish.
With a gentle simmer and a few straightforward steps, you can prepare a versatile sauce from scratch.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- A small handful of fresh basil leaves
- A small pinch of sugar, optional, if the tomatoes are particularly acidic
Soften the Onion and Garlic
Warm the olive oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent.
Add the garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds. Keep the heat moderate and avoid heavily browning the garlic, as it can develop a bitter flavor.
Add the Tomatoes and Seasoning
Pour the crushed tomatoes into the saucepan and stir well. Add the oregano, salt, and black pepper.
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. If the tomatoes taste noticeably acidic, add a small pinch of sugar to balance the flavor.
Simmer Until Thick
Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows excess moisture to evaporate and gives the sauce a thicker, more concentrated consistency.
For a rustic texture, leave the sauce slightly chunky. For a smooth consistency, carefully blend it with an immersion blender.
Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving.
Finish With Fresh Basil
Tear the basil leaves and stir them into the sauce during the last few minutes of cooking. This preserves their fresh herbal character while complementing the tomato base.
For added richness, finish with a small drizzle of olive oil just before serving.
Serving Ideas
Use the finished sauce with pasta, as a pizza base, over vegetables, or in baked dishes.
For additional flavor, adjust the herbs or add a small amount of chili flakes to suit your preference.
A Versatile Homemade Sauce
Homemade tomato sauce combines a short ingredient list with a simple cooking method to create a flavorful foundation for many meals. By gently cooking the aromatics, simmering the tomatoes until thickened, and finishing with fresh basil, you can achieve a balanced sauce with a satisfying homemade character.
